Research on reading and phonics instruction:
National Reading Panel Report. A news release from the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development stating that its Independent Panel--in the most comprehensive evidence-based review of reading research ever conducted--determined, among other findings, that systematic phonics instruction leads to the greatest improvements in reading and spelling.
Reading Program Advisory. An advisory from the California Department of Education determining that a balanced and comprehensive approach to reading instruction must have an organized, explicit skills program which includes phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding skills.
"A Scientific Approach to Reading Instruction". Research findings concerning the development of literacy from the Center for Academic and Reading Skills recommending direct, systematic instruction in phonics.

Homeschooling/parents as educators:
American Homeschool Association. The AHA is a service organization sponsored in part by the publishers of Home Education Magazine. Services include providing news, information, and resources for homeschoolers, the media, and education officials.
National Homeschool Association. In its mission statement the NHA states it exists to advocate individual choice and freedom in education, to serve those families who choose to homeschool, and to inform the general public about home education.
Parents as Teachers. PAT is a national parent education organization which develops curriculum and works with parents to provide support and information about their developing child. Website provides information on and parent-child activities for encouraging motor development, promoting pre-reading capabilities, the importance of music in the learning process, etc., updated monthly.

The AMS is a national organization promoting the teaching methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori which stimulate a child's intellectual development, creativity, self-reliance, and social responsibility through multisensory developmentally-appropriate activities and materials. The Montessori approach to reading involves explicit phonics instruction.

Founded in 1929 by Dr. Maria Montessori, AMI serves to promote her teaching methods which are based on the child's natural development. The method utilizes hands-on activities and takes a strong phonics approach to teaching reading.
